A special Christmas present for Eunzoo. I have never met her, but her daughter says she is a survivor. She has just beaten back breast cancer for the second time. I had fun with the ferns on the border. She has no idea this is coming her way. Can't wait to hear about her reaction.

Rain, Rain, Stay

Rusty here making a post for mom. She is upstairs making another quilt. When it rains around here, it really rains. The only good thing is that the neighbor's slobber hounds are in the house and not barking. Mom is keeping her eye on a big ol'pine tree on the slope. It seems to be leaning towards our house. The power men have parked all the trucks in front of our house, ready to go help cats all over town. We feel safe with them here. Yesterday we baked them cookies. Two more days of the heat up high, quilts for me to sleep on all over the house (I pretended to be really cold), and mommy stuck at home. I think I like rain.

I made this quilt from students drawings and added our town name. I sat at the sewing machine with my lap top at Tonya's website. I was super proud of this, especially the tilde over the 'n'. Congratulations Tonya! Can't wait to get the book.

Yankees Quilt for Lisa

After I had started this quilt for Lisa, her friend, my sister-in-law Patty, said, "How about a Yankees' quilt!" Well, this is about as far from Yankees as it gets. I hope it brings a hug from California to Lisa. And who knows, maybe the Yankees would consider new uniforms in turquoise and hot pink. The quilt was made with a layer cake.

Halloween Haunt

This was my 12th Halloween Haunt; my school's biggest fundraiser. In lieu of a child's quilt, I tapped into our local love of all things USC and UCLA. The result was two table runners and baskets made by Longaberger. They both did really well at the auction.

All Grown Up

One of my favorite students of all time, Christopher, went off to college this fall. He will be studying marine biology. I surprised him with a quilt for his dorm room. I used 10 or so ocean prints and quilted it with ocean waves.

Surfin' Baby

This surfin" baby will be living in Alaska. I thought a little California sunshine in a quilt just might brighten up a very cold winter. It was made on a 5" grid. Charm squares and half charms alternated with 2.5" and 5" strips of Kona cotton. I may never do the channel quilting again. It took forever and shifted the quilt left to right more than I expected. The result, however, was a very soft hand.

Jenn will be having a little boy this fall. She lives in Alaska and her shower will be in Southern Cal this weekend. I made her a boy friendly diaper bag with travel themed burpies. There is a quilt too! I love this one. The colors are so much fun.

Shannon's Baby

Shannon works at our school as a PE and recess aide. She always has a smile on her face and speaks in soft tones. The kids LOVE her. Mrs. Shannon, as she is known, is now having a baby of her own. We will miss her at LCE. She was mum about the baby's gender so I went old school with the 1930's fabric and some hankies.

I made these place mats for my jet setting friends Bob and Roz. Captain Bob is a pilot with Quantas and literally is a jet setter! We love the opportunity to spend time with him and his beautiful wife Roz. Back home in Australia, they own a winery, hence the wine theme fabric.

School's out and I'm loving it! I adore the kids, love my job, but let's face it, having the summer off is pretty wonderful. I have been sewing every day and even managed to dust the family room yesterday and clean the kitchen. Today I am off to deliver some fabric tubs to a friend and surprise my Angel Kathy with a 4th of July table runner. It is nothing fancy, but will add a bit of color to her table.

Helping Hands Festival for Haiti and Chile

I had the best day today. One of Girl Scout troops held a fundraiser to help the earthquake victims Haiti and Chile. This same group held their first festival after Hurricane Katrina. I am so proud of these girls. They made gift items for sale, had music, a magician, a garage sale, games, and craft booths. The fire department came with the big hook and ladder truck. Even Miss La Canada made an appearance. I made a quilt and it sold right away. I love hanging out with 2nd graders, but watching them grow up is pretty cool too.

Found the Camera!

My camera goes between home and school everyday. So does a tote bag for the computer, a lunch bag, a purse, and a bag of stuff full of what ever the kids and I are doing. The camera has been lost for almost a week. It was hiding in the bag I put away containing all the supplies for the Brownie troop project. I was so proud of myself for being organized, and the poor camera was buried under several yards of brown wool felt.

Here is the lovely quilt I received from Melanie of Australia. This was for the Doll Quilt Swap 8. It has 213 little triangles. Yes those little bits of color are pieced in. Yikes! I don't like to work this small, but I love it when someone does it for me! It is finished off with a narrow border of Kaffe and there are kitties on the back. All in all I would say this is a perfect quilt. Thank you Melanie!

Another late thank you is for the When, When contest Rusty and I won. Lynne and MIllie sent us yummy cat treats and the best chocolate I have ever had. I didn't get to be this shape by not knowing about chocolate. This stuff is amazing and they have a web site! www.vanotis.com

Busy, Busy Weekend

It is Sunday night and I am sitting on the sofa with my sweet kitty and I'm watching Celebrity Apprentice. I have been on a frantic schedule all weekend to finish up four projects. I'm pooped! Project One was to finish up a quilt for 2 year old Lily. I volunteered through Margaret's Hope Chest. Lily loves kitties. The quilt has animals and other things hidden in the stitches. She can sing Twinkle, Twinkle while she traces around the star inner border. It is ready to be mailed on Monday. I also included a stuffed kitty and some chocolate and bubble bath for Lily's mom.

Project Two was to embroider 7 aprons for the Lovely Luncheon Ladies at work. Every 6 weeks they come to school and make an extraordinary lunch for us. I bought the aprons and just added the names. The group is coming on Wednesday for a St. Patrick's Day Lunch. This leprechaun has a little surprise for them.

Project Three was to hem a wedding gown for a friend. Thank goodness she is a size 0 and that dress was narrow. I spent hours re-beading the hemline as all the beads fell off when I cut off the extra three inches! The gown is silk lawn and I have been keeping it safe covering every surface it touched with a sheet. I still need to hem the silk lining. The wedding is April 3.

Project Four is my Brownie sewing lesson. I will have 12 little sewers in my classroom after school on Friday. I make a small pillow with buttons on the corners. The kids will embroider a pillow topper which will button on. They leave with a finished project in about an hour. It takes me just a few hours :) to make all the pillows. Next month I'll have another troop with 16 girls.

The State Department of Education is sending a team next week to see if we qualify for a Distinguished School Award. We are consistently number 1 or 2 in the state of California; it's about time we have the title. Everyone is sprucing up for the big visit. Our library always has interesting displays for the children. The librarian has an Underground Railroad quilt and asked me if I had an Irish quilt or anything green. Nope, but I can whip up something! I grew up hearing, "There are only two kinds of people, the Irish and those who wish they were." I guess I am really Irish. How else do you explain that I had all of this green fabric (plus more) and 4 yards each of 2 different leprechaun prints? Really Irish or really crazy.

One of our teaching staff, Trysha, is battling cancer. She taught 6th grade language arts with great passion. I made this book themed quilt filled with wishes and prayers for her complete recovery. The pattern is called Piece of Cake from Thimble Blossoms. I used fat quarters, but the pattern goes even faster with a layer cake.

I am puppy sitting for the long Presidents' Day weekend. I was supposed to just come and feed and tuck the little guy in, but he didn't do well the first night. So now we are together 24/7. I left him with Rob for about 30 minutes so I could spend time with the cat and Brody barked the entire time. He missed me! He had a baseball game today and 3 walks. Right now he is passed out asleep. Here is Rob meeting Brody for the first time.

My little man cat is 15 years old today. We brought him home on January 5, 1996. The vet thought he was about a year old and had been living on the streets of Pasadena. We had to sign a disclaimer that he could be a "danger" because he bit the animal control agent. He has hardly been a danger! This kitty has been my best friend for 14 years and I'm praying for at least another 20! Happy Birthday Rusty!

I received my swap quilt from Maria in Denmark. She is a beautiful seamstress and was super generous with all the extra gifts. She included a gift to open for each Sunday in December. By month's end, I'll have an advent quilt for Christmas. Her paper piecing is impeccable. I am thrilled!

I was determined to make this swap quilt from scraps and only scraps. I used an idea from a blog post at Library Gal Quilts. I just love the way it turned out. It almost didn't get mailed to my swap partner. I pieced another basket at the same time. It will be MINE! I quilted it with little packages, stars, and pine boughs.

Pilgrim Day

Tomorrow is Settlement Day. We have been pilgrims for 66 days and now it is time to make our pilgrim home. Parents are coming to help with gardening, quilting, rug making, mattress making, and fireplace building. While I was busy getting everything ready, Rusty was warming his perfect spot and keeping my husband from HIS favorite spot. The cat always wins.

Housing Project Completed

The house quilt was finished ahead of time, not my usual last minute sewing on binding on the way to the event. I had so much fun, real fun, quilting it. There was a freedom in the whimsy. Nothing had to be just so. I think it is the best quilting I have done to date. I used 15 different colors of thread and over 25 different fabrics. It ended up making a nice sum for the PTA and was purchased by one of the parents in my class.

Dear Fearless Liberated Ladies,
I did it! I pieced my first word! Actually 2 words with a tilde! Can you sense my excitement? I sat at the sewing machine with the computer next to my little cutting board. I ripped out a few because I kept getting messed up on background and letter color, but other than that, I did it. I love the little 'c'. My mom's reaction was that I didn't measure. Nope, didn't measure a bit until I attached it to the houses. This quilt is a tribute to the La Canada houses we love and almost lost in the fire. It will be in a silent auction next Saturday. I need to get borders on and start quilting today. Thank you both. Even though you didn't know it, you were there with me yesterday cheering me on.

Wonky? Maybe Not

I have had this idea of making a home town quilt for the school auction for a couple of years. I wanted the kids to draw a house and then I would copy it somehow. This year I am determined to make it work, even if everything isn't "perfect". The idea of being liberated is tempting, but I always seem to try and straighten everything up and do the math way too much. Here are my first attempts at houses. I gave up on every block being the same size in the first 30 seconds. Now if I can only let go a bit and let the houses be a bit more wonky.

Goodbye Patrick

I teach at a school, in a small town, nestled up against the now bare San Gabriel Mountains. Our classrooms are in pods. We can swing open the doors and visit each other. My neighbor Jan teaches first grade. I teach second. I love seeing her little ones and scope out future second graders for Room 7.

When I came to work at this school, I was immediately struck at how connected everyone was. As each new teacher comes, they are brought into the fold. Today the school family was out in force to support Jan and to say goodbye to her son. At 25, Patrick died last week. His mom says his death was a perfect storm of circumstances.

I'm proud to work with such caring people and I know going forward that Jan will have many to help her through the tough times ahead.

I Heart Fireman!

This photo is amazing. These are the homes just north of my school. They have an amazing view all the way to the ocean and back up against the Angeles National Forest. Each one was nearly lost yesterday. When the smoke cleared, the brush was gone and the houses remained unscathed!

The fire has now moved more in my direction but seems to be burning up the canyon and I live down. The sky is brown. The air is brown and thick with smoke. How am I going to have 20 little ones all cooped up tomorrow? Welcome to second grade, now don't breathe until after 3:00.

Waiting

As a child, I used to sit on the front lawn and watch the hillsides burn. My father was a Los Angeles County fireman and we knew he was up there working. It was an event. Now as an adult, it is an event with fear attached. I left school on Thursday night and saw many people out in the street taking photos as the fire makes its way down the mountain approaching multi million dollar homes and my school! This is a view up from school.

Friday morning when I came to work the campus was covered with ash and burnt leaves. My classroom was filled with smoke. I've lived here all my life and it has never been this close to so many people I know. Luckily I live 4 miles away, but I will have little ones start school on Monday who live in harm's way. We pray that the winds stay down and that the smoke lifts so the water drops can continue.

Having spent most of the summer sleeping in. I had to get up early yesterday to sit on an interview panel at school. Downstairs at 7:00 my cell phone was ringing. My cousin Bobbie, who never calls, is on the line. "Debbie (the name my family calls me), Steve died last night." Steve was 49. His wife is my cousin Joyce. They have a 16 year old son. Steve had a sore throat, took amoxicillin, and died. He was a lovely man. Steve was funny and optimistic. We are all just so sad that he is gone.

Perfection

We just came from watching Julie and Julia. Two hours of perfection. We go to the movies every weekend. The place was packed and at 52, I was one of the youngest in the audience. There was applause at the end and even a tear or two. I came home and hugged my autographed copy of Julia's baking book.

I teach with a lovely lady named Lynley. She is pretty and calm and just has a sweet way with kids. When she announced that she was pregnant, I knew just what to make. I wanted this to look like something her grandmother had saved, an old fashioned pretty pink quilt. The quilt was made with scraps, except for the Peter Rabbit toile border. I quilted it with heart shaped leaves and daisies. Much to my surprise, baby Alexis' nursery is decorated with Peter Rabbit and pink toile. I nailed it! I also made her matching burp cloths. The burp cloths have been a big hit so I set up an etsy site, Caitty Baby.

Last month Rusty entered a raffle to help a sick kitty and the lucky little bugger won! Lynne, a talented quilter, finished his custom quilt and we couldn't be more thrilled. Rusty claimed it in a matter of seconds. Life is good for one spoiled cat.

Beautiful Sedona! Here is a picture of the mountains from the front porch of the local quilt shop. The shop was bright and happy. Everything was displayed beautifully and the staff was helpful, not hovering. I found fabric for my in the planning stages beach quilt. I also found a nice house-cat sitting gift for my mom. My husband said that the shady porch was nice as well :)

Halloween Block Swap

Today was my first official day of summer vacation. It started with a meeting at school, a rushed lunch, and a drive to UCLA Medical Center with my mom. Not one visit with my sewing machines. Didn't even touch a piece of fabric. It has to get better.

School will soon be out. Testing is almost over, Open House is lurking around the corner, more testing and then SUMMER. I've had a very productive sewing season since my last post. I've made 4 baby quilts, 2 diaper bags, over 4 dozen really cute burp pads, a beautiful batik lap quilt, and two comfort quilts.

Next up will be a Hawaiian quilt for my son. I also want to launch my etsy site and see if I can make a little money.

Blankets, Buddies, and Brains!

My students have just finished a unit on kindness. I wanted us to share with others and I found an organization in New York (Blankets, Buddies, and Brains) that provides blankets and books for inner city children. I thought 40 sets sounded doable. It proved to be a bit too many for second grade hands to handle. I enlisted the help of some former students, now in high school, a dear friend, and my husband to make 30 sets. My second graders worked with parent volunteers to tie the remaining 10 blankets. Here is a blurry photo of the first batch to get mailed. They really did look nice! We should receive photos from the receiving class in December.

Catch Up Time

I have such good intentions, taking photos of my activities, then lack the time to get things posted. Here is an attempt to get caught up on my creative endeavors. Every year I make a quilt of some kind for our school's fundraising silent auction. This year American Doll Ruthie set the theme for "An American Doll's Christmas." I made the quilt and stocking to accompany the doll and her Christmas accessories.

What would a project be without help. My beautiful 14 year old cat Rusty is at my side and ready to lend a paw. He offered help sewing as well as checking out the final product. And all that help makes a kitty tired.

Little Christmas Houses

I took the challenge and entered a block swap! I love Christmas and have put a ban on myself from buying any more Christmas fabric, ever. I have quite a bit :) This seemed like a way to infuse my stash with new inspiration without buying anything. Here are a few pictures of my blocks. Peter has cut my hair for more than 10 years. He and his wife are some of the nicest people I know. When it rains, he and his brother walk the ladies out to the car with umbrellas so our newly styled hair stays nice and dry. Every hair cut ends with a hug and "Blessings!"

This is the second quilt finished in July. I do really well starting quilts, not so well in the finishing department. I love to use charm squares for a quick quilt. This one took 3 packs of an April Cornell Moda collection and is for a friend who is recovering from breast cancer. I have way too many friends, parents and grandparents of students who have struggled with cancer. I started making quilts as a way to give a lasting hug and to honor the gift these people are to so many. I quilt a small gift box shape into each quilt.

Summer Stash Challenge

Using fabric from my blue tub and scraps from a Posh kit I bought from Quilt Taffy, I made this lap quilt for my sister-in-law Peggy's 50th birthday. Nothing fancy, yet these six inch squares represent the blue dishes found in her grandmother's Marthas Vineyard dining room. The colorful border looks like the gingerbread houses found in the island's historic Campground. The border and backing fabric are from Susan Branch's Vineyard collection. My husband will be delivering the quilt at a surprise birthday party this weekend.

This is my first post and opportunity to figure out the formatting on this "easy" blog tool. The more blogs I check out, I am totally impressed and a bit overwhelmed at all the options, or lack of options due to my ability! I hope this is the first of many and that these post continue to show my growth as a blogger.
